; Chapacal s/n; s/d/q AR$700/900/1550; )
Looking straight out of a science-fiction movie, these strange but inviting apartments are
tucked right into the
cerro,
and blend in with it. They are stylish, spacious and cozy; fine
places to hole up for a while and a great option for families.
Huaira Huasi
HOTEL $$$
( 490-8070;

; RN52, Km5; d/apt for four AR$666/1655; )
One
of a handful of characterful hotels on the main road above town, this stands out for its
majestic valley views and handsome terracotta-colored adobe buildings. There are two
apartments that sleep five, and they are just beautifully decorated with local fabrics and
cardón wood; rooms are obviously smaller but still lovely. Good value.
Terrazas de la Posta
HOTEL $$$
( 490-8053;

;
d standard/superior AR$720/850; )
Hand-
some rooms with spacious bathrooms share a veranda with great sierra views. Superiors
are newer and larger, with air-con and eye-catching modern styling.
Eating
Tierra de Colores
NORTHWEST ARGENTINE $
(Libertad s/n; mains AR$40-70; 11am-3.30pm & 7-11pm)
A likeably rustic dining area with
cane ceiling is a venue for delicious traditional food, served in generous portions. Juicy
tamales,
toothsome
locro
and sizable llama brochettes are the way to go. Service is
pleasant, and there's somewhat touristy but enjoyable live music at lunch and dinnertime.
El Churqui de Altura
NORTHWEST ARGENTINE $$$
(Salta s/n; mains AR$55-90; noon-3:30pm & 7:30-10:30pm)
Substantially overpriced, but
dishes of local trout, goat or llama stews and oven-cooked empanadas are pretty tasty. It
only opens lunchtimes if it's busy.
