980; ) This Colón staple has been around for a century, but it certainly never
looked like this before. A sleek refit has left it looking modern and glistening. The rooms
aren't quite as posh; the superiors are the new ones, with quality bathrooms. But the
combination of plaza-side location (some rooms in each category have balconies) and
decent-sized heated pool out the back make it a winner.
Centro Apart Hotel APARTMENT $$$

street - head straight down Sourigues from the bus terminal to reach it - this complex of-
fers large, comfortable apartments with decent kitchen that are a good deal for anybody
and great for families. Prices are signficantly reduced in the low season. There are nu-
merous similar apartment complexes around town.
Hotel Costarenas HOTEL $$$

AR$1187-1535; ) This favorite of weekending porteños (residents of Buenos
Aires) offers smart riverside accommodation and a decent spa complex (included), in-
door and outdoor pools, and a good restaurant. Rooms are well equipped, but the interior
rooms are pricey for their size and lack of view. Those with a view are much lighter and
larger but significantly more expensive.

El Sótano de los Quesos DELI $
( www.elsotanodelosquesos.com.ar ; cnr Chacabuco & Av Costanera; mixed plates for 1/2 people
AR$50/90; 5-10pm Thu-Fri, 12:30am-10pm Sat & Sun; ) Near the tourist office, this in-
triguing spot serves a wide variety of artisanal cheeses and other delicacies at pretty
thatched tables on a lawn looking over the port. There's also locally made wine and beer
on hand, and a cellar shop whose aromas will almost compel you to buy. It's open more
frequently in high summer.
La Cantina ARGENTINE $
(Peyret 79; mains AR$30-60; 11am-2:30pm & 8:30pm-midnight) Just off the plaza, this
likable family-run restaurant does a nice line in uncomplicated and filling fare, with siz-
able chicken and beef dishes taking their place alongside tasty homemade pasta and
river-fish options, including surubí empanadas.
