Don Heath Showing you can sneak up on Lions as Long as you are Taller
At that time the wildlife cordon fences were built across the migration routes, particularly
for the wildebeest and zebra that would migrate between the summer feeding areas in the
Kalahari and the winter-feeding area around the swamps. Owens described thousands of
wildebeest being killed at the fences. There are reports that between 1982 and 1984, 1 million
were either killed on the fences or shot. Bulk hunting licenses of $50 per zebra were issued
when the hides would sell for $400 and 400,000 were shipped out. Hence from 1985 to 1989
the lion overpopulation then spread into Zimbabwe and in Western part human predation
became a problem and the huge population of hyenas and jackals resulted in close contact and
fighting between them that resulted in the worst rabies outbreak in history.
