Description: This is an erect, rhizomatous, and perennial species possessing
rounded leaves above water and heart-shaped leaves below water. The low-
ers (15 cm diameter) are white to pink.
Compounds and activities: The ethanolic lower extracts of this species possess
anticancer properties and are activated against human cervical carcinoma
HeLa cell lines and MCF-7 cell lines. The IC 50 values for these cell lines
were 91.57 and 99.6 µg/ml, respectively (Selvakumari et al., 2012). The lower
extracts of this species possess alkaloids, ellagicacid, phenols, tannins, sapo-
nins, and lavonoids. The aqueous and ethanol extracts of the tubers of this
species possess hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and antioxidant activities.
