In-Depth Information
Though now owned by neighboring Squaw (tickets are good at both resorts and a free
shuttle connects them), Alpine remains a no-nonsense resort without the fancy village, atti-
tude or crowds. It gets more snow than Squaw and its open-boundary policy makes it the
most backcountry-friendly around. Boarders jib down the mountain in a terrain park de-
signed by Eric Rosenwald.
Also look for the supersmart and adorable ski patrol dogs. The turn-off is 4 miles north-
west of Tahoe City. Stats: 13 lifts, 1800 vertical feet, over 100 runs.

Larger than it looks from the road, this gem, 6 miles south of Tahoe City, proves that big-
ger isn't always better. Locals and in-the-know visitors cherish the awesome lake views,
laid-back ambience, smaller crowds, tree-lined slopes, open bowls (including the excellent
but expert 'Quail Face') and a high-speed quad that gets things moving.
Families love the wide, gentle slopes. It's also the best place to ski during stormy weath-
er. Stats: eight lifts, 1650 vertical feet, 64 runs.
