WINTER DRIVING AROUND LAKE TAHOE
From late fall through early spring, always pack snow chains in case a storm rolls in.
Chains can also be purchased and installed in towns along I-80 and Hwy 50. Also stash
some emergency supplies (eg blankets, water, flashlights) in the trunk, just in case your
car breaks down, traffic gets tied up or roads close completely due to snowfall or ava-
lanche danger.
Before hopping in the car, check road closures and conditions:

Few ski hounds can resist the siren call of this mega-sized, world-class, see-and-be-seen
resort that hosted the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. Hardcore skiers thrill to white-knuckle
cornices, chutes and bowls, while beginners practice their turns in a separate area on the
upper mountain.
The valley turn-off is 5 miles northwest of Tahoe City. Stats: 29 lifts, 2850 vertical feet,
