In-Depth Information
Lewiston Lake
Pleasant little
Lewiston
is little more than a collection of buildings beside a crossroad, 26
miles west of Redding, around 5 miles off Hwy 299 on Trinity Dam Blvd and a few miles
south of Lewiston Lake. It's right beside the Trinity River, and the locals here are in tune
with the environment - they know fishing spots on the rivers and lakes, where to hike and
how to get around.
The lake is about 1.5 miles north of town and is a serene alternative to the other area
lakes because of its 10mph boat speed limit. The water is kept at a constant level, provid-
ing a nurturing habitat for fish and waterfowl. Migrating bird species sojourn here - early
in the evening you may see ospreys and bald eagles diving for fish. The
Trinity River
Fish Hatchery
( 7am-3pm)
traps juvenile salmon and steelhead and holds them until
they are ready to be released into the river. The only marina on the lake,
Pine Cove Mar-
and its wildlife, boat and canoe rentals, potluck dinners and guided off-road tours.
If you're just passing through town, make a stop at the
Country Peddler
(4 Deadwood
Rd)
, a drafty old barn that sits behind a field of red poppies and is filled with cool antiques,
rusting road signs and antique collectibles that seem like they were pulled out of some
long-lost uncle's hunting cabin. The owners, avid outdoor enthusiasts, know the area like
the back of their hand. It's often closed outside summer.
Sleeping & Eating
Several commercial campgrounds dot the rim of the lake. For information on USFS camp-
grounds, contact the ranger station in Weaverville. Two of these campgrounds are right on
the lake: the wooded
Mary Smith
( 877-444-6777; tent sites $11; May-Sep)
, which is
more private; and the sunny
Ackerman
(sites $11)
, which has more grassy space for famil-
ies. If there's no host, both have self-registration options. There are all kinds of RV parks,
cabins for rent and motels in Lewiston.
