Be lulled to sleep by the surf at this low-lying retreat hidden in the sand dunes north of
Monterey. Reached via golf carts, townhouses harbor petite rooms with gas fireplaces and
binoculars for whale-watching. Sunset bonfires bring out s'mores. The beach is an off-lim-
its nature preserve, but there are public beaches and walking trails nearby. Pet fee $40.

High atop a hill and barely visible through a shroud of foliage, this 1911 arts-and-crafts
house hums a playful Alice in Wonderland tune through its seven immaculate rooms, a
few with fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Over afternoon tea and cookies or evening wine
and hors d'oeuvres, ask the genial hosts about the house's many salvaged architectural ele-
ments.

Uphill from Cannery Row, Lighthouse Ave is chock-a-block with casual, budget-friendly
eateries, from Hawaiian barbecue to Middle Eastern kebabs.
