WINTER FUN
In winter, a thick blanket of snow drapes over trees and meadows, the pace of activity
slows and a hush falls over the roads and trails. Note that snow often closes Generals
Hwy between Grant Grove and Giant Forest and that tire chains may be required at any
time. These can usually be rented near the parks' entrances, although you're not sup-
posed to put them on rental cars. For up-to-date road conditions call 559-565-3341 or
check www.nps.gov/seki.
Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are both hugely popular activities, with 50
miles of marked but ungroomed trails crisscrossing the Grant Grove and Giant Forest
areas. Winter road closures also make for excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoe-
ing on Sequoia's Moro Rock-Crescent Meadow Rd, Kings Canyon's Panoramic Point Rd
and the Sequoia National Forest's Big Meadows Rd. Trail maps are available at the visitors
centers, and park rangers lead free snowshoe tours (equipment included). Tree-marked
trails connect with those in the Giant Sequoia National Monument and the 30 miles of
groomed terrain maintained by the private Montecito Sequoia Lodge ( MAP GOOGLE MAP
; 559-565-3388, 800-227-9900; www.montecitosequoia.com ; 8000 Generals Hwy). Equipment
rentals are available at Grant Grove Village, the Wuksachi Lodge and the Montecito
Sequoia Lodge. There are also snow-play areas near Columbine and Big Stump in the
Grant Grove region and at Wolverton Meadow in Sequoia.
In winter, cross-country skiers with reservations can sleep in one of the 10 bunks at
Pear Lake Ski Hut ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 559-565-3759; www.sequoiahistory.org ; dm $38-42;
mid-Dec-late Apr), a 1940-era pine-and-granite building run by the Sequoia Natural His-
tory Association. You'll be glad to see it after the strenuous 6-mile cross-country ski or
snowshoe trek from Wolverton Meadow. Reservations are assigned by lottery in Novem-
ber. Call or check the website for details.
Information
Lodgepole Village has an ATM, and there's free wi-fi at Wuksachi Lodge.
