Plate 4.10 (A-C) Dog-faced water snake, or bockadam ( Cerberus rynchops ). Common
throughout its range, this member of the family Homalopsidae is an aquatic, often estuarine
inhabitant, and may be quick to bite when handled. However, to date, there are no documented
medically significant cases.

colubrine snakes are inhabitants of the arboreal strata, and feed on lizards (a strong preference),
birds, eggs, and small mammals. They are able to dorsoventrally flatten their bodies and exploit
