Plate 4.9 (A-D) Brown tree or cat snake ( Boiga irregularis ). The only snake species ever
to be subjected to population control by an Act of the United States House of Representatives,
this species has ecological and medical importance on Guam. Its spread through the Western
Pacific island chains has been somewhat sensationalized, but its adaptability and fecundity
still identify it as a species of ecological concern outside of its natural range (New Guinea and
northeastern Australia). A handful of pediatric victims bitten by this species on Guam have
reportedly exhibited systemic effects. However, the etiology of the described systemic effects
remains inconclusive (see Section 4.4).
