In-Depth Information
Plate 4.41 Patagonian racer ( Philodryas patagoniensis ), Brazil. Several series of bites by
this species have been well-documented and analyzed. This species has medical importance in
parts of South America similar to that of P. olfersii. The majority of bites produce only mild
local effects. There are no documented systemic effects from bites of this species, although it
produces Duvernoy's secretions that contain fibrinogenolytic enzymes, and the possibility of a
coagulopathic envenomation must be considered (see Section 4.1 and Table 4.1 ).

Plate 4.42 Common green racer or green palm snake; boiobu; boiobi; cobra cipo;
tucanaboia; lora verde; others ( Philodryas viridissimus ), Manaus, Brazil. Another active
South American “racer,” there are few reports of bites by this species. One case, in which
medical documentation is lacking, involved a bite from a captive specimen and included
progressive edema as well as surgical intervention (fasciotomy; see Section 4.1 and Table 4.1 ).
