sible, flag down the rare yellow or red cabs, which are driven by local drivers.
Getting There & Away
Train The most hassle-free transport to Guǎngzhōu is to take the high-speed intercity
trains from Hung Hom station to Guǎngzhōu East train station (two hours). It has 12 de-
partures between 7.25am and 8.01pm, returning from Guǎngzhōu the same number of
times from 8.19am to 9.32pm. One-way tickets cost HK$230/190 in 1st/2nd class for
adults and HK$115/95 for children aged five to nine.
MTR One-way and return tickets for Guǎngzhōu can be booked in advance at MTR sta-
tions in Hung Hom, Mong Kok, Kowloon Tong and Sha Tin, and at MTR Travel at Ad-
miralty station, or with a credit card on the MTR website ( www.it3.mtr.com.hk ) or via the
Tele-Ticketing Hotline (2947 7888).
Hi-speed train A cheaper way to get from Hong Kong to Guǎngzhōu is to board a hi-
speed train once you go across the Lo Wu border to Shēnzhèn. They run frequently
between Shēnzhèn and Guǎngzhōu East train station (¥80 to ¥100, 1¼ hours) from
6.20am to 11.30pm.
Bus CTS has frequent buses from Metropark Hotel in Causeway Bay and many CTS
branches in Hong Kong to Guǎngzhōu (¥110). The trip takes 2½ hours.
Getting Around
Metro Guǎngzhōu metro ( www.gzmtr.com ) has nine metro lines in full service and cov-
ers most of the sights. Depending on the line, the metro runs from about 6.20am to 11pm.
Fares start from ¥2 for the first 4km.
Taxi The flagfall is ¥10 for the first 2.5km, and ¥2.60 for every additional kilometre. A
trip from the main train station to Shēnzhèn Island should cost between ¥30 and ¥40. A
taxi to/from the airport will cost about ¥200.
