In-Depth Information
Hang by MTR (nearest station: Tin Hau), you will pass the alley with blooms and buck-
ets.
Tai Hang is recognised by Unesco for its Mid-A
n Festiivaal, when residents lead a
handmade dragon measuring 68m and stuck with thousands of incense sticks
through their streets to cleanse the neighbourhood of all that may be unwell. For three
nights, scent and smoke enter each street, lane, home, all to the sound of drum and
dance and gong. The tradition has been happening annually since 1880, when it was
conducted to control the plague. Nowadays a lion dance might also happen on
Buddha's Birthday, closer to springtime.
Tai Hang: a community at any time of day and season.
