Searching the waves for the spouts of humpback whales, or training your binoculars on a lone albatross gliding
high in the sky, hundreds of miles from land. Arriving at the dead of night in ports like Piraeus and Port Said,
where work carries on as if it was the middle of the day. Nothing epitomizes the joys of slow travel better than a
voyage on a cargo ship, spending anything from several weeks to a few months at sea.
You need to be flexible, as schedules aren't rigidly fixed - boats may arrive late in port, leave early if they've filled
with their cargo, or maybe not even stop in a certain port at all. As such, cargo trips aren't so much an alternative
way of getting to specific places as an experience in themselves. On board there will probably be a pool, a gym,
somewhere to watch films (and maybe a DVD player in your cabin), a bar and a dining room. Mobile phone reception
and internet access are unlikely, but then this is the chance to spend days or weeks away from the cares of the world.
Despite the ships being major polluters, it is nevertheless an environmentally friendly way for an individual to
travel. These vast vessels (the largest carry the equivalent freight of six thousand lorries) already ship the majority
of the world's international cargo and they use no more fuel as a result of you and your luggage being onboard.
Nor do they alter their schedule for you or add more boats if all the cabins are full. You are effectively a paying
hitch-hiker.
