take in the Capitol Building (146 Huqiu Road), an Art Deco marvel of its day. The city's first
air-conditioned theatre, it was constructed so that no columns obstructed the view to the
movie screen.
Just west of the Postal Museum, also facing the creek, is the sinuous Art Deco facade of
Embankment House , built in 1932 by the fabled Sir Victor Sassoon. Originally boasting 194
flats, it was Shanghai's largest apartment building at the time.
HUQIU ROAD
Cross back to Suzhou Road via the Sichuan Bridge, stopping at the midpoint for one of the
city's best views, taking in Pudong, Hongkou and the buildings behind the Bund. Head east
on Suzhou Road to Huqiu Road. No. 128 is the rear of the True Light building, with a different
look, a different name (the Christian Literature Society Building ) and different occupants.
Continue south on Huqiu to the Rockbund Art Museum 4 [map] (Shanghai Waitan
Meishuguan; 20 Huqiu Road; Tue-Sun 10am-6pm; charge). Located in the elegant former
Royal Asiatic Society building, it's another fine example of Shanghai Art Deco fusion, de-
signed by British architect George L 'Tug' Wilson. Rotating exhibitions of modern art are
spread across its four floors.
