zas in America, and its plain cheese pizza was honored as one of The Daily
Meal's 101 Best Pizzas in America.
Across the street from Pizza Delicious is Piety Street Sno-Balls, based at the
Old Ironworks, which also hosts monthly flea markets, theatrical produc-
tions, festivals, and other events. Next to Pizza Delicious, in the hot-pink
building at the corner of Piety and Chartres, is Euclid Records, which, in ad-
dition to selling new and used vinyl and CDs, stages live-music performances.
Turn right on Chartres. Across the street is an arched staircase leading
across railroad tracks to the new Crescent Park, a 1.4-mile linear green space
that stretches from Elysian Fields Avenue in the Marigny to Mazant Street in
Bywater (see sidebar). The park isn't included on this tour but is highly re-
commended.
Walk one block and turn right on Louisa Street. Toward the end of the block,
at 634 Louisa, is one of Bywater's most elegant homes, a late-19th-century
raised center-hall Italianate cottage that houses The Country Club. Serving a
largely gay clientele, The Country Club has a restaurant and bar inside and
a swimming pool, cabana bar, and hot tub out back (the backyard amenities
cost extra).
In contrast to the stateliness of The Country Club is Markey's Bar, a con-
genial dive that's been open since 1947. Markey's is a popular gathering spot
for watching sports or trying one or two of the 25 beers on tap.
Walk two blocks to the corner of Burgundy and Louisa. Maurepas Foods, at
3200 Burgundy, is another of the neighborhood's hip restaurants. The own-
ers describe their menu as a “revolving door based on the available meats
and produce of our purveyors.” The fare includes dishes such as goat tacos,
duck meatballs, and chorizo sandwiches.
Walk two blocks to St. Claude Avenue, turn left, and walk one block to Clou-
et Street. At the corner of St. Claude and Clouet is Sugar Park, another pizza
joint (try The Bird, topped with chicken Parmesan and lots of cheese).
Across St. Claude is Saturn Bar, another neighborhood dive that is consist-
ently ranked as one of the top bars in New Orleans.
Turn left on Clouet. Walk two blocks to Burgundy Street and turn right.
Walk one block to Montegut, turn left, and return to the starting point at
Montegut and Dauphine.
Although this is the end of the tour, there is so much more to Bywater, and
we'd be remiss in not mentioning the neighborhood's other treas-
