In-Depth Information
Across Dauphine is one of the newest entries in the Bywater culinary scene:
Oxalis, a gastropub named for a plant that the owners noticed growing on
the property opened in December 2013. It describes itself as a “whiskey-fo-
cused restaurant that just so happens to serve amazing food.” The menu, de-
signed to complement the extensive whiskey list, includes such items as
Korean wings, cauliflower “steak,” and sweet potato poutine.
A neighborhood like Bywater needs a good thrift store, so if you're in the
market for secondhand stuff, check out the Bargain Center, at the opposite
corner of Dauphine and Louisa. The place is packed to the gills with
everything from antiques and jewelry to vintage photographs and Mexican
folk art. The Bargain Center doesn't have much in the way of secondhand
clothing, but the Pop Shop, next door at 3212 Dauphine, does.
Continue walking in the 3200 block of Dauphine. At 3218 Dauphine is Sat-
suma Cafe, a cool eatery with an especially impressive selection of fresh-
squeezed organic juices, from the Popeye (a mixture of spinach, lemon, kale,
and apple) to the Cleanser (beet, fennel, cucumber, and lemon). The quinoa
salad and the roasted-pear-and-brie melt are among the yummy items on the
menu.
At the end of the block on the left, at the corner of Dauphine and Piety, is
Frady's One Stop Food Store, a convenience store that also makes a pretty
decent po'boy, perfect for matching with a cold beer and enjoying at one of
the outdoor tables.
Turn right on Piety Street and walk one block to Royal Street past Mickey
Markey Park, once a rundown playground that received a much-needed up-
grade when city officials shut it down in 2011 because of high levels of lead
contamination. In addition to remediation work, the park received fresh
landscaping, updated playground equipment, and new concrete walkways.
Walk one block to Chartres Street past Pizza Delicious, which got its start in
2010 as a twice-a-week pop-up. It proved so popular that when the owners
decided to open a permanent eatery on Piety, they were able to raise some of
their startup money through crowd sourcing. Pizza Delicious serves tradi-
tional New York-style pizza like cheese and pepperoni but also offers a spe-
cial pizza of the day. Past pizza specials have included braised Brussels
sprouts, wild boar and charred green onion sausage, and roasted cauliflower
and marinated red onion. In 2013, Pizza Delicious made two national best-of
lists: Its Hot Sopressata was named one of the website Thrillist's Top 33 Piz-
