greenway was still under construction but expected to open in the spring of
2015, connecting the French Quarter to Bayou St. John and Mid-City.
Two blocks down on North Carrollton, in a two-story Victorian house
between Toulouse and St. Peter Streets, is Tubby & Coo's Mid-City Book
Shop, which opened in late 2014 and specializes in such “nerdy” genres as
sci-fi and fantasy (think Harry Potter, Dungeons and Dragons, and Doctor
Who).
Walk another four blocks to Orleans Avenue and turn left. Except for a
school and a day-care center, this is a residential area known mostly for its
Endymion parade celebrations. The Krewe of Endymion, with its dazzling
double-decker floats, is one of the most spectacular parades of the Mardi
Gras season, and throngs of revelers crowd the Orleans Avenue neutral
ground in anticipation. The parade begins at Orleans and City Park Avenue
and travels all the way to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the Endymion
Extravaganza, a star-studded afterparty. But it's along this stretch of Or-
leans where the real partying takes place: The area is in such demand for
parade viewing that many folks camp out days ahead of time to ensure they
have a prime spot.
From North Carrollton walk eight blocks to City Park Avenue. To the right
is City Park (see the next walk), which at 1,300 acres is one of the largest
urban parks in the United States. Across City Park Avenue is Delgado Com-
munity College, Louisiana's oldest and largest two-year college. Delgado of-
fers 35 associate-degree programs, dozens of certificate and technical-dip-
loma programs, and more than 100 noncredit courses. The largest programs
include nursing, general studies, criminal justice, computer information
technology, and culinary arts.
Across from Delgado is a commercial strip that includes MoPho, a Southeast
Asian café whose chef, Michael Gulotta, once worked in the kitchen of Res-
taurant August, one of the Crescent City's top-rated restaurants. Pepper
jelly-braised clams, crispy chicken wings, and pork-shoulder spring rolls are
among its heavenly menu offerings.
Continue walking down City Park Avenue; be extra-cautious, as parts of the
sidewalk are broken up. At the corner of Toulouse Street is Bud's Broiler, a
locally owned hamburger chain that's been around since the 1950s. Bud's is
a true burger joint, with nothing to look at on the inside except a menu that
gives the newer gourmet-burger places in town a run for their money. Try
