the burger with grated Cheddar and smoked hickory sauce, and be sure to

Just past Bud's, you'll be entering one of the largest collections of cemeteries
in New Orleans. Often referred to as “cities of the dead” because of their
aboveground grave sites, they include the Masonic, Cypress Grove, Green-
wood, and St. Patrick's. Turn left at Canal Street and you'll encounter Odd
Fellow's Rest, the Charity Hospital cemetery, and a Jewish cemetery. Each
cemetery has its own fascinating background. Cypress Grove, for example,
was the first cemetery built to honor the city's volunteer firefighters and
their families. Odd Fellow's was built to provide a burial site for Protestant
African Americans, who were barred from being buried with whites.
As you head back to your starting point on North St. Patrick, take note of the
Victorian mansion across Canal at the corner of St. Bernadotte Street. Built
as a private residence in 1872 by Mary Slattery and renovated in subsequent
years by various other owners, the mansion served as P. J. McMahon & Sons
Funeral Home from 1930 to 1985. It is now used as a special-events venue
and, come October, as the Mortuary Haunted House—known for being so
spooky that those under 18 are discouraged from visiting. During the year,
paranormal experts lead ghost tours and ghosthunting investigations, shar-
ing “the secret legendary history of the mansion and why some of the souls
that passed through the home never left.”
