The 96´ contour is located 20´ downslope from the 97´ contour in
Figure 9.22. Using an engineer's scale, measure 20 feet from the 97´
contour line to locate the 96´ contour line in the figure.

The formula S = V / H can also be used for locating contour lines.
Referring to Figure 9.22, how would you locate the 97´ contour line,
assuming that it will be parallel to the 97´ contour line shown as a
dashed line in Figure 9.23? Again ask: What do you know from the
figure?
Slope is .05 or 5%
Vertical distance is 1', determined by subtracting the 96' contour line from
the 97' contour line.
Horizontal distance between the 97' and 96' contour lines is what you want
to determine.
