Survey Line
Principal Meridian
The property lines for all parcels of land—
such as an urban residential lot, subdivision,
farm, or school site—are established and refer-
enced to a federal or state land survey system.
Each land parcel and its property lines can be
researched in public records, such as a municipal
land office or public works department, and are
described according to the operating set of bench
marks and the land survey grid system. For
the most part, the local land survey system is
a finer-grained grid tied in to the township and
range system. The corners of a set of property
lines that define an individual land parcel are
tied to this system, with one corner based on the
nearest bench mark located in the vicinity of the
property. This bench-mark system is maintained
by the local governmental jurisdiction. Any one
bench mark can be researched at the appropriate
land records office of a city or county, depending
on where the parcel is located.
