In-Depth Information
The Monaco-to-Nice bus (#100) is not identified at most stops—verify with a local
by asking, “A Nice?” A handy stop is below Monaco-Ville at Place d'Armes (on the main
road to Nice in front of the Brasserie Monte Carlo). Another is a few blocks above the
casino on Avenue de la Costa (under the arcade to the left of Barclays Bank).
Buses #112 (to Eze-le-Village) and #114 (to La Turbie) depart Monaco from Place
de la Crémaillère, one block above the main TI and casino park. Walk up Rue Iris with
Barclays Bank to your left, curve right, and find the bus shelter across the street at the
green Costa à la Crémaillère café. Bus numbers for these routes are not posted, but this is
the stop.
Last Call: The last bus leaves Monaco for Villefranche-sur-Mer and Nice at about
20:00; the last train leaves Monaco for Villefranche-sur-Mer and Nice at about 23:30. If
you plan to leave Monaco by train after 20:30, buy your tickets in advance (since the win-
dow will be closed), or bring enough coins for the machines.
By Cruise Ship
Cruise ships tender passengers to the end of Monaco's yacht harbor, a short walk from
downtown. Trèselegant! Aseasonal TI isrightnexttothetenderdock(openonbusydays
May-Sept). To summon a taxi (assuming none are waiting when you disembark), look for
the gray taxi call box near the tender dock—just press the button and wait for your cab to
arrive.
Whether visiting the sights in Monaco, or heading to outlying destinations, your first
step for most journeys is to walk from the cruise port to the little market square called
Place d'Armes . It's an easy and level stroll: Head straight along the yacht harbor until
you reach the busy street, which is Boulevard Albert 1er. Use the white overpass (with
an elevator) to cross the street, then follow green Gare S.N.C.F./Ferroviare signs through
a maze of skyscrapers, across the street, and up a charming lane lined with motorcycle
shops. Continue straight into the peach-and-yellow building, and ride the free public elev-
ator up to Marché Place d'Armes (level 0). You'll pop out into Place d'Armes. At the far
end of this square is a roundabout and the busy Rue Grimaldi.
Getting into Town: To reach the cliff-top old town of Monaco-Ville, you can either
hike steeply up to the top of the hill next to the harbor, or ride a bus up. By foot, the fast-
est, steepest ascent (with an elevator option partway) is near the tip of the Monaco-Ville
peninsula, just above where the tenders arrive: Climb up the stairs next to the Yacht Club
de Monaco to the base of the hill, turn left, then curl around the tip of land (with the wa-
ter on your left-hand side), following signs for Palais/Musées. At the parking garage, you
can either keep hiking up through the manicured park, or enter the garage and ride up the
elevator, then the escalator; either way, you'll emerge near the Cousteau Aquarium, close
