Eating in Monaco: Severalcafésservebasic,inexpensivefare(dayandnight)onthe
port.Iprefertheeateriesthatlinethefloweryandtraffic-freeRuedelaPrincesseCaroline,
which runs between Rue Grimaldi and the port. The best this street has to offer is Huit
et Demi. It has a white-tablecloth-meets-director's-chair ambience, mostly outdoor tables,
and cuisine worth returning for (€15 salads, €15 pizzas, €18-24 plats , closed Sat for lunch
and all day Sun, 7 Rue de la Princesse Caroline, tel. 00-377/93 50 97 02). For a simple
and cheap salad or sandwich, find the Crock'in café farther down at 2 Rue de la Princesse
Caroline (closed Sat, tel. 00-377/93 15 02 78).
In Monaco-Ville, You'll find incredible pan bagnat ( salade niçoise sandwich),
quiche, and sandwiches at the yellow-bannered Boulangerie, a block off Place du Palais
(open daily until 21:00, 8 Rue Basse). Try a barbajuan (a spring roll-size beignet with
wheat, rice, and Parmesan), the tourta de bléa (pastry stuffed with pine nuts, raisins, and
white beets), or the focaccia sandwich (salted bread with herbs, mozzarella, basil, and to-
matoes, all drenched in olive oil). For dessert, order the fougasse monégasque (a soft-
bread pastry topped with sliced almonds and anise candies). The best-value restaurant in
Monaco-Ville is U Cavagnetu —and it's no secret. You'll dine very cheaply on specialties
from Monaco just a block from Albert's palace (€13-18 plats , €26 menu , daily, 14 Rue
Comte Félix Gastaldi, tel. 00-377/97 98 20 40). Monaco-Ville has other pizzerias, crêper-
ies, and sandwich stands, but the neighborhood is dead at night.
