In-Depth Information
The MV International cruises across the border to Montana.
Horseback Riding
Just off the main park access road before town is Alpine Stables (403/859-2462), which
offers hour-long trail rides (starting on the hour 9am-5pm) for $35. Two-hour rides cost
$60 and pass through prime wildlife-viewing habitat. The three-hour ride, costing $80,
takes in the bison paddock, while eight hours in the saddle opens up possibilities such as
a climb to the summit of Vimy Peak ($145). These longer rides leave on demand, so call
ahead to make a reservation.
Winter Recreation
Winter is a quiet time in the park. Traffic on the roads is light, the Prince of Wales Hotel
sits empty, the snowcapped peaks and abundant big game provide plenty of photographic
opportunities, and a few trails are maintained for cross-country skiing. The main access
road is plowed regularly, and the Akamina Parkway is cleared to allow access to ski trails.
Skiing in the park is usually possible December-March, but conditions can change dramat-
ically. Cold arctic fronts scream down from the north, and chinook winds from the west
