In-Depth Information
Fishing
Fishing in the lakes is average, with most anglers chasing brook and rainbow trout, pike,
and whitefish. A national park fishing license is required and can be obtained from the
Waterton Visitor Centre or any of the administration offices. The license costs $10 for a
single day or $35 for an annual permit.
Windsuring
Winds of up to 70 kph (45 mph) attract hard-core windsurfers throughout summer and into
fall. The winds are predominantly south to north, providing fast runs across Upper Water-
ton Lake from the beach at Cameron Bay. The lake is deep, keeping the water temperature
low and making a wet suit necessary. Read the warning signs at the beach before heading
out.
Scuba Diving
On any given summer day, scuba divers can be seen slipping into the frigid waters of
Emerald Bay. A steamer was scuttled in the bay in 1918. It had been used to haul logs and
as a tearoom but now sits on the lake's floor, attracting divers who find it a novelty to ex-
plore a sunken ship so far from the ocean. No equipment rental is available in the park. The
closest is at Awesome Adventures (314 11th St. S., 403/328-5041) in Lethbridge, where
you can also get your tanks filled. Full gear rental is $75 per day, $105 for the weekend, in-
cluding air fills. Through this shop, certification courses and field trips to Waterton Lakes
are organized throughout the summer. Stop in on your way to the park for a rundown on
all the dives, or ask at the Waterton Visitor Centre.
Goling
The rolling fairways and spectacular mountain backdrop of Waterton Lakes Golf Course
(403/859-2114) can distract even the most serious golfer's attention. The 18-hole course,
designed by Stanley Thompson and dating to 1929, is not particularly long (6,103 yards)
or difficult, but the surrounding mountains and unhurried pace of play make for a pleasant
environment. The course is four kilometers (2.5 miles) north of the town site on the main
access road and is open June-early October. A round of golf costs $49. Club rentals are
$9-25, and a power cart is an additional $34 per round. At the end of your round, plan on
relaxing at the clubhouse over a light meal and cold drink.
