M Villa Caruso (640 Connaught Dr., 780/852-3920, 11am-midnight daily, $20-39) is
a steakhouse with a modern mountain vibe. The upstairs location—request a balcony table
if the weather's warm—allows great views across the valley. The menu features a wide
variety of Alberta beef dishes, including a massive 16-ounce T-bone for $39. But there's a
lot more than steak on offer, including chicken, seafood, and pasta dishes.
Seafood
Fiddle River Restaurant (upstairs at 620 Connaught Dr., 780/852-3032, 5pm-10pm daily,
$24-39) is a long way from the ocean and not particularly coastal in feel, but it offers
a wide variety of seafood. The strikingly rustic decor matches dark polished wood with
forest-green furnishings, and large windows provide mountain views (reservations are
needed for windowside tables). Trout, arctic char, red snapper, ahi tuna, and halibut all
make regular appearances on the blackboard menu.
European
M Syrahs (606 Patricia St., 780/852-4559, 5pm-9:30pm daily, $24-37) is an elegantly cas-
ual eatery offering a wide range of uncomplicated dishes using Canadian game and pro-
duce prepared with Swiss-influenced cooking styles. Start with venison sausage strudel,
then choose between dishes such as banana- and pine nutcrusted rack of lamb or cheese
fondue for two. Syrahs also has one of Jasper's most impressive wine lists. Also notable at
Syrahs is the staff, who seem experienced and knowledgeable.
For standard Greek fare, head to Something Else Restaurant (621 Patricia St., 780/
852-3850, 11am-11pm daily, $15-21). Portions are generous, service is friendly, the prices
are right, and you'll find plenty of alternatives if the Greek dishes don't appeal to you.
Miss Italia Ristorante (610 Patricia St., 780/852-4002, breakfast, lunch, and dinner
daily, $15-21), upstairs in the Patricia Centre Mall, features bright and breezy interior de-
cor with tables also set on a narrow terrace bedecked in pots of colorful flowers. Cooked
breakfasts (from 8am) are $7-12. The rest of the day, look for pastas made fresh, baked fil-
let of Atlantic salmon, and souvlaki with a side of salad and pita bread. Check out the daily
specials before ordering—they are taken from the regular menu but discounted a couple of
bucks and come with soup or salad.
