Ribbon Falls
• Length: 9 kilometers/5.6 miles (3 hours) one-way
• Elevation gain: 335 meters/1,100 feet
• Rating: moderate
• Trailhead: upper parking lot at Ribbon Creek, off Kananaskis Village access road
Moderate elevation gain and a well-formed trail make this one of the more popular day
hikes in the Kananaskis Valley. Following Ribbon Creek through a narrow valley between
Mount Kidd and Ribbon Peak, it passes chunks of iron from an old logging camp and the
remains of two abandoned log cabins. Beyond the second cabin, the trail enters Dipper
Canyon, dotted with pools of water, then climbs across an avalanche slope to a lookout
over Ribbon Falls.
Two kilometers (1.2 miles) beyond the falls is Ribbon Lake, but reaching it requires
some rock-climbing skills. From the falls, the trail switchbacks up a scree slope to a sheer
cliff face. Three lengths of chain and a series of narrow ledges need to be negotiated to
reach the cliff top, and then it's a straightforward hike through a subalpine forest to the
lake.
