looking down to Barrier Lake from Prairie View Trail
Baldy Pass
• Length: 4.5 kilometers/2.8 miles (1.5-2 hours) one-way
• Elevation gain: 520 meters/1,710 feet
• Rating: moderate
• Trailhead: Highway 40, 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) south of Barrier Lake
This trail traverses Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park to a 1,990-meter (6,530-foot)
divide separating the Kananaskis River and Jumpingpound Creek watersheds. Cross High-
way 40 from the unmarked parking lot, entering the woods at the marked trailhead. After
500 meters (0.3 mile), at a marked intersection, the trail enters a usually dry watercourse,
which it follows the entire way to the pass. Only the last 500 meters (0.3 mile) are partic-
ularly steep, across an avalanche slope. An even better view than that afforded at the pass
can be had by following the northern ridge from the pass. It's a steep scramble, though,
gaining as much elevation in one kilometer (0.6 mile) as the whole trail gains between the
trailhead and pass.
