Duck down an alleyway off main street to Chef's Studio Japan (709 8th St., 403/
609-8383, noon-3pm and 4:30pm-10:30pm daily), a Japanese restaurant with a distinctive
artsy feel. Seating is at a sushi counter or at regular tables surrounded by original art. The
cuisine is not overly inventive, but the portions are generous and the tempura—always a
good litmus test—is light and delicate. Educate yourself in the variety of Japanese cooking
styles by ordering one of the hot and cold platters designed for sharing between two (from
$28).
Wild Orchid Asian Bistro (Silver Creek Lodge, 1818 Mountain Ave., 403/679-2029,
daily except Tues. for dinner, call for lunch hours, $15-28) is my favorite Japanese res-
taurant in the Canadian Rockies. It features all the usual choices, all expertly crafted in the
open kitchen, as well as many with a Western twist. Perfect presentation, mountain views,
and a large deck add to the appeal.
GLOBAL
The prime location of Elita (743 Railway Ave., 403/609-2613, 9am-9pm daily, $14-18)
won't become apparent until you climb the steps from busy Railway Avenue to the sun-
drenched patio and admire the surrounding mountains. The menu blends simple cooking
styles from around the world—a Moroccan chicken salad, Mexican spiced wraps, and Thai
curries. Vegetarians and vegans are well cared for.

INFORMATION
The best source of pretrip information (apart from this topic, of course) is Tourism
Canmore Kananaskis (403/678-1295 or 866/226-6673, www.tourismcanmore.com ). A
Travel Alberta Information Centre (403/678-5277, 8am-8pm daily May-Sept.,
9am-6pm daily Oct.), just off the TransCanada Highway on the west side of town, provides
plenty of information about Canmore and Banff.
The Rocky Mountain Outlook and Canmore Leader are both filled with local issues
and entertainment listings; both weeklies are available free on stands throughout the valley.
The Canmore Public Library (950 8th Ave., 403/678-2468) is open 11am-8pm
Monday-Thursday, 11am-5pm Friday-Sunday.
