St Brelade occupies the whole of the south west of the island, and although it has a signific-
ant population (third highest parish total on the island) there is plenty of wild land waiting
to be explored.
Places to Visit
Corbiere Lighthouse is probably the most photographed location in Jersey. Morning or
evening, rough or calm, winter or summer the conditions are always changing, attracting
residents and visitors alike. Jersey Tourism organises a number of walks out to the Light-
house although it is a delightful region to wander around on your own. Just listen for the
tidal buzzer and if it sounds head for shore immediately. Take note of the fate of Peter Ed-
win Larbalestier as you walk down the slip.
Fish “n” Beads : Close to the Wayside Café, in St Brelade's Bay, this is a beach side hut
where interesting art can be purchased or you are able to make your own bead jewellery. It
is ideal for all ages. For further information call 01534 742348.
La Lande de Ouest are the gorse-covered headlands which stretch west from Beauport to
Corbiere. There are great views and superb walking with a diverse flora and fauna.
Les Quennevais Sports Centre is open throughout the year and is a modern purpose built
sports centre. There is a 25-metre pool plus a training pool, gym, squash courts, sports hall
and café. Tel: 01534 449880. Check the website for information about opening times.
Portelet Common is delightful headland to wander over and provides an unusual perspect-
ive of La Cotte de St Brelade and the rest of St Brelade's Bay.
Reg's Garden is essentially the project of one man, Reg Langlois. A delightful pace to
relax during the summer months there are a number of musical fund raising events. In ad-
dition it has recently become possible to hold civil weddings in the garden. Opening hours
are 10.00 to 17.00. Tel: 01534 743756
St Aubin's Fort was built in the 1540's to provide some protection for St Aubin's Harbour,
although it has been remodelled several times, including additions in the 1940's by the Ger-
man's. Today it is used as an Outdoor Activity Centre by the local education authority. It
is a pleasant walk across the causeway at low water; just keep an eye on the rising tide.
St Brelade's Church and Fisherman's Chapel . This has to be one of the finest, if not the
finest church, on the Island, located just above the beach in St Brelade's Bay. It is well
worth spending some time wandering around the church grounds and entering the Fisher-
man's Chapel. Probably built in the 1tth and 12 th centuries it also saw service a store for
canons and ammunitions until the mid 1880's. The superb wall paintings were discovered
in 1918, following a major storm.
