wonderful, large and fully screened thatched restaurant

with birders, with over two hundred species seen along its

rainforest lodge, set beside a lovely turquoise pool, a 10min
walk along the right-hand bank upriver from Blue Creek and
not far from Hokeb Ha cave, is the sister property of the IZE
Belize resort on South Water Caye (see p.184), and doubles
as an ecology study centre. The lodge itself has a large river-
view deck, while accommodation is in wooden cabins, set

Impressive riverside property, accessible by road from San
Felipe village, and holding eleven smart thatched cabañas
set on stilts and connected by a raised boardwalk lined
with cacao and mango trees, as well as five individual
rooms. All have a chic feel while offering varying levels of
comfort; more expensive units have a veranda with
hammocks, while the honeymoon suite has a jacuzzi and
plunge slide straight into the river. The giant ten-sided
palapa -restaurant flaunts imaginative local artwork, while
the location is ideal for exploring sites inland, kayaking the

Benito Poité near the Maya ruin of Pusilhá. One traditional
Maya building holds a dormitory where up to twelve can
sleep in bunk beds, while another has a traditional fire

providing an experience of living like the ancient Maya,
albeit with modern composting toilets. Maya food such as
spinach-like callalou and jippi jappa soup is served, and
