2000s
As we entered the 2000s and the current new millennium, transfer
speeds increased dramatically. CD-ROM, DVD and these higher stream-
ing rates again led to higher bit rate and higher sample rate audio in
games.

Microsoft Xbox
In 2001, Microsoft decided to capitalize on their expertise in PC
gaming by releasing the Xbox. The Xbox console had a lot of
i repower, and has continued to increase its capacity over the
years. The Xbox 360 featured multi-channel surround sound
output, 48KHz 16-bit audio, 320 independent decompression
channels, 32-bit audio processing, and over 256 separate audio
channels! The recently released 8-core Xbox One also has a
dedicated audio processor called SHAPE (Scalable Hardware
Audio Processing Engine) with three dedicated audio processors!
Working together, SHAPE provides 512 compressed XMA
audio voices, 128 dedicated mix voices, over 2000 simple
i lters (assignable to hardware or virtual voices) and 512 EQ/
Compressor ef ects.
Nintendo's revolutionary Wii (2006) and the Wii
U (2012) which feature an innovative controller.
