Unity Free vs Pro
The free version is non-crippled and completely functional in terms
of scripting and publishing, supporting Mac/PC/Linux, iOS, Android,
and Webplayer builds for no fee. However, there are a few signii cant
tools and features that come with the Pro version which you should be
aware of:
Dark Visual Theme : Most obviously it supports an additional dark
visual theme, good for working with projects in a low-contrast
setting.
Proi ling : Being able to analyze the performance of the engine in
various ways (including the sound triggering) is very vital. Unity
Pro features robust proi ling capabilities to help you tweak the
performance of your App.
Audio : All of the FMOD-derived ef ects like i ltering, chorusing, delay,
distortion, are only available in the Pro version. This is an unfortunate
limitation for audio folks on a budget. These are all referred to as
Filters and they adapt the sound of an Audio Source much like an
ordinary plug-in on a DAW works. Earlier we discussed the various 3D
settings in an Audio Source. Notably, the Low Pass Filter can be used
in conjunction with the Audio Source in order to provide occlusion or
obstruction ef ects.
As with paid-for Pro versions, the basic Pro license for the Editor as
at the printing of this topic does NOT include the Pro iOS or Android
development packages, but all the bells and whistles will run on Mac,
PC, Linux, and web platforms.
If you're wondering why I'm not mentioning the different Xbox,
Playstation and Wii licenses, it's because they are made with
certified developers of these platforms and are usually several
thousands of dollars at minimum.
