The faded, pink confection at the northern end of Praça dos Martírios is the
Museu
de Arte da Fundação Pierre Chalita
, an intriguing wood-floor art gallery housing the
private collection of painter
Pierre Chalita
(1930-2010). The main floor contains
eighteenth-century paintings and religious art (Baroque altars, calvaries and statues),
including two works attributed to the workshop of
Caravaggio
, while Chalita's own
Expressionist, often unsettling, work is featured upstairs. The basement is mostly
filled with modern and contemporary work of Alagoas artists including Chalita's
wife, Solange.

The small
Museu do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico
is chiefly worth visiting for its
Afro-Brazilian artefacts (some relating to the Quebra do Xangô massacre of 1912), and
various relics and photographs of the bandit leader
Lampião
(see box, p.260), including
the famous “team photo” of his severed head along with those of his wife and leading
gang members. The building is the handsome nineteenth-century home of Américo
Passos Guimarães, acquired by the Institute in 1909.
Praça Dom Pedro II
Praça Dom Pedro II (marked by a bust commemorating the emperor's visit here
in 1859) is dominated by the mid-nineteenth-century
Catedral
Metropolitana
(1859), a vast but fairly unexceptional space dedicated to city patron saint
Nossa
Senhora dos Prazeres
. The other main building complex here is the
Provincial
Assembly
, housed in the old Palácio Tavares Bastos (1850), with the Ministério da
Fazenda (Ministry of Finance) on the opposite side of the plaza (1902). From here
you can walk west into the commercial heart of the city, pedestrianized
Rua do
Livramento
and
Avenida Moreira Lima
, with the usual smattering of shops and
cheap cafés.
