Praça Deodoro
Praça Deodoro is a sleepy, shady rectangular park whose centrepiece is a statue of
Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca, gallantly astride a horse and waving his hat at an
imaginary crowd. At the eastern end lies the 1919 Academia Alagoana de Letras and the
Tribunal de Justica (old and new buildings); at the western end is the pretty pink Te a t ro
Deodoro ( T 82 3315 5665, W teatrodeodoro.al.gov.br) next door to the new Complexo
Cultural Teatro Deodoro. Built in 1910, the theatre is still used for shows and concerts.

Museu Théo Brandão

The UFAL (Universidade Federal de Alagoas) runs the Museu Théo Brandão , housed
in the grand belle époque mansion known as Palacete dos Machados, incongruously
marooned along the desolate seafront near the port. Inside, the folk art collection
of teacher and folklorist Theotônio Vilela Brandão is arranged in a series of artfully
presented galleries: hanging displays of ex-votos, rooms of ceramic pots, lace and huge
festival puppets and headgear. Students are on hand to guide you, but rarely in English,
and labels are Portuguese only.

Jaraguá
Once the booming commercial heart of the city, the port district of Jaraguá , halfway
between the centre and Pajuçara, fell on hard times after World War II and is only now
being regenerated, its old warehouses converted into stores and a clutch of museums,
mostly along Rua Sá e Albuquerque .

he Museu do Comércio de Alagoas , housed in the stately Associação Comercial
building (1928), has a mildly interesting collection of old maps, documents and ledgers
laying out the trade history of the state, and a much less enticing exhibit on global
technology since 1900 (though the “old” 1970 mainframe computer is fun).
