To the left of the altar is the tomb of
Mem de Sá
, third viceroy of Brazil from 1556 to
1570, and the most energetic and effective of all Brazil's colonial governors. It was he
who supervised the first phase of building in Salvador, in the process destroying the
Caeté people.

Next to the cathedral stands one of the best museums in the city, the
Museu Afro-
Brasileiro
, contained within a large nineteenth-century building that used to be the
university's medical faculty (and is still part of the Universidade Federal da Bahia).
The main building houses three different collections, one on each storey. Most labelling
is Portuguese only, so grab a written English guide at the entrance.
