Catedral Basílica
Praça da Sé, Terreiro de Jesus • Mon-Sat daily 8.30-11.30am & 1.30-5pm • R$3 • T 71 4009 6666, W arquidiocesesalvador.org.br
At the end of the Praça da Sé, facing the adjoining square known as the Terreiro
de Jesus , is the Catedral Basílica . The core of the structure was completed in 1672
and it was once the chapel of the largest Jesuit seminary outside Rome. Its
Mannerist interior is one of the most beautiful in the city - particularly the
Portuguese tiling and stunning panelled ceiling of carved and gilded wood, which
gives the church a light, airy feel that's an effective antidote to the overwrought
Rococo altar and side chapels.
