In-Depth Information
When traveling in Canada, bring a coin purse. In 1989 the country switched
from paper dollars to coins, dubbed “loonies” in reference to the Common
Loon—Canada's national bird—stamped on the backsides of the coins.
The trail to Parker Ridge showcases Saskatchewan Glacier, the longest glacier in the Columbia Icefield.
5. Castle Mountain Viewpoint
The 36-mile stretch of Trans-Canada 1 between Banff and Lake Louise yields unending
vistas of mountain, valley, and forest. Road signs serve as reminders to drive cautiously
as elk, moose, coyotes, and other wildlife frequently forage near the highway. About mid-
way to the lake, a short detour east along Hwy. 93 leads to Castle Junction. The turnout
just north on the Bow Valley Parkway showcases red-tinged Castle Mountain, which can
be seen all along the route.
