entrance into the ancient city, with ramparts stretching out from both sides. However, the
gate was largely destroyed in the 1240 Mongol sacking of Kyiv, and what you see today
is a 1982 reconstruction that encloses whatever remains of the original. The statue to the
side is of Yaroslav, although people call it 'monument to the Kyiv cake' - you'll under-
stand why when you see it.
Andriyivsky Uzviz
A man walked up the hill, erected a cross and prophesised: 'A great city will stand on
this spot'. That legend is in the name of this steep cobbled street, lined with quaint, ran-
domly shaped houses. It translates as Andrew's Descent for the man is Apostle Andrew.
Despite multiple stalls selling junk souvenirs, like fake Soviet army hats and matryoshka
(Russian dolls), the street exudes an almost Parisian, precisely, Monparnasse, air. There
are diversions galore along the way, including a few wonderful cafes, restaurants, galler-
ies, craft shops and museums.

Starting at the top of Andriyivsky uzviz by the National Museum of Ukrainian History,
the alley skirts around a large ravine offering great views of the city. It's always full of
people and there is a cluster of modern urban art in its middle section. On warm nights,
young Kyivites perch on a stone barrier here to chat over a latte or beer - bottles always
wrapped in paper because of the not-so-vigorously enforced ban on drinking alcohol in
the street. Many people descend the wooded slope to enjoy stronger booze and more in-
timate communication.

(Andriyivsky uzviz; 10am-8pm; Kontraktova pl) Naturally, the stunning gold and blue
sight shining at the top of Andriyivsky uzviz is called after Apostle Andrew. Built in
1754 by Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who also designed the Winter Palace in St
Petersburg, this is a magnificent interpretation of the traditional Ukrainian five-domed,
cross-shaped church.
