10am-5pm Thu-Tue; Kontraktova pl) The much-loved author of The Master and Margarita
lived here long before writing his most famous book - between 1906 and 1919. But this
building was the model for the Turbin family home in The White Guard, his first full-
length novel and the best book to read about Kyiv. Substituting for the interiors lost in
the Soviet period, designers created a strange and memorable space populated with the
author's memories and characters. There are more tourists in Andriyvsky uzviz than the
museum can cope, so booking is essential.

(Andriyivsky uzviz 2B; admission 30uah; noon-6pm Tue-Sun) This museum lays out indi-
vidual histories of Andriyvsky uzviz buildings. The sheer jumble-sale eclecticism of the
collection - showcasing the lives of dressmakers, soldiers, a rabbi, a Syrian-born Orient-
alist and more - exudes bags of charm.
Podil
The funicular and Andriyivsky uzviz both lead down to this riverside mercantile quarter.
An appealing grid of streets lined with quaint lanterns and eclectic turn-of-the-20th-cen-
tury buildings, it's the antidote to all those Soviet facades that dominate vul
Khreshchatyk. Dating back to the earliest settlements, the area grew quickly around the
port. Podil was last rebuilt in 1811 after a devastating fire and emerged largely unscathed
from WWII. Today it's a buzzing restaurant district.
