large Soviet pansionat (resort) is undergoing a slow transition to normality, but it is still
far from modern standards. Rooms look a little Soviet, but the furniture and bathroom
equipment are new. Breakfasts are heavy on greasy main courses, so don't expect any
muesli. But sea-facing rooms come with an excellent view of the fortress.
Arzy TATAR, INTERNATIONAL$
(vul Morskaya 5; mains 50-80 uah; 24hr) This Tatar-run place with wicker chairs on a
beachside terrace is popular for its relaxed, almost Goan ambience and stunning views of
the illuminated fortress in the evening. Italian and Japanese food on the menu are hilari-
ously inauthentic, but all the Crimean Tatar dishes are competently cooked and delicious.
Getting There & Away
There are frequent bus services to both Simferopol (32uah, 1¾ hours, every 15 minutes)
and Feodosiya (20uah, 1½ to 1¾ hours, every 15 minutes) via Koktebel (15uah, one
hour). There are also four daily buses going along the coastal road to Yalta (32uah, three
hours).
Getting Around
The town centre is 1.2km south of the bus station. It's another few hundred metres ahead
to the beachfront naberezhnaya (promenade) and a further 2km right (west) to the fort-
ress. At the bus station, marshrutky bound for the town centre stop under the sign , for
Novy Svit - Novy Svit, for Dachne -. All Novy Svit buses pass the town centre and the
fortress on the way.
