great views, reasonable accommodation and decent prices. The cheapest economy rooms
(April to October only) are dormitory-style with shared bathrooms, no windows and
breakfast not included; however, there's a cafe where you can pay for breakfast. More
expensive accommodation includes a private bathroom and is open year-round.
Kefalo Vrisi PENSION$$$
( 050 398 7147; www.kefalo-vrisi.com ; vul Istoricheskaya 15; d from 500uah; ) Flower and
fruit trees cover every patch around this pension set in a secluded valley, about 15
minutes' walk along a footpath from the embankment. All rooms face Cembalo fortress.
The first of Balaklava's beaches is about 30-minutes' walk from here. Book well in ad-
vance in summer and call to arrange a pickup - not all taxis will agree to take you there
and carrying luggage uphill to this place is quite an exercise.

Kharchevnya Dreyka SEAFOOD$$$
(Drake's Inn; 050 278 4116; ul Mramornaya 17; mains 70-100uah) Near the entrance to the
Naval Museum, this is an excellent fish restaurant with waiters dressed as Peter Pan pir-
ates. All kinds of Black Sea fish are on offer, which is no wonder, since the Fish's Nest is
just around the corner.

fish restaurants where people find nothing but endemic Crimean dishes they've
never heard of.

ile left a significant imprint. Here is the list of the most ubiquitous eats:
