In-Depth Information
'The Charge of the Light Brigade' did more than anything to mythologise the event
for posterity. On its 150th anniversary, the charge was even re-created in front of
British dignitaries, including Prince Phillip.
The 'Valley of Death' is now a vineyard, just north of the M18 road from
Sevastopol to Yalta. You can look down on it from the hill of Sapun Gora, where
there's a WWII diorama ( 9.30am-6pm Tue-Sun Apr-Oct, to 4pm Nov-Mar) and memorial.
Marshrutka107 (1.50uah) will get you there from central Sevastopol.
Sights & Activities
Genovese Fortress of Cembalo RUIN
All that remains of the 15th-century Genovese fortress are three semi-ruined
towers on top of a strategic hill, guarding the mouth of the harbour. But the view of the
bay and the sea coast, stretching to Cape Aya, is breathtaking. The fortress was the site of
the last stand of Balaklava's garrison, composed of local Greek fishers who defended
their town from the Allied troops during the Crimean War.
Cold War Museum NUCLEAR BUNKER
(Tavricheskaya nab 24; adult/student 40/15uah, by boat 60uah; 10am-6pm, ticket desk to
4.45pm) The town's quirkiest sight lurks across the bay from the main promenade. The
concrete opening in the harbour wall is the mouth of a natural underwater cave that the
Soviets turned into a secret nuclear submarine factory officially known as Facility-825.
Today you can breach the huge nuclear-blast-proof doors and wander through parts of the
facility, which features repair docks, mess rooms and, thankfully, an arsenal that is now
empty. You can take a one-hour Russian-language walking tour or a ½-hour boat tour,
leaving on the hour and at 4.45pm. Take a jumper: it gets chilly inside.
Balaklava Beaches BEACH
In summer, there are frequent boats to beaches with names such as Golden and Silver
(15uah). About five boats a day go to Cape Fiolent and Vasili beach (25uah and 15uah
respectively).
