Ignore the decor, or
rather the absence of thereof - this no-nonsense place is all about Jewish food as they
made it in a
schtetl
circa 1900. Definitely try
ghefilte fisch
(cold fish cutlets) and
latkes
(potatoes with pike roe). The place is kosher and closed on Saturdays.

Since Bulgarians are one of the
biggest minorities in the Odesa region, it is only appropriate for their spice- and meat-
rich cuisine to emerge on the local culinary stage. Our favourite here is
agneshko po-ger-
govsky
- mutton rolls with cheese and spinach.

This
place is a tribute to all Soviet grannies who spent long Odesa summers stuffing hundreds
of jars with delicious garden produce - marinated, pickled, salted, jellified, caramelised -
you name it. There are stakes of jars containing all kinds of preserves in the main room
which doubles as a shop. On the verandah, people are treated to traditional Odessite and
more inventive dishes with international influences.
Kumanets
UKRAINIAN$$$
(vul Havanna 7; mains 40-100uah; noon-midnight)
A kitsch little island of Ukraine in Rus-
sian Odesa, this veritable Ukrainian village produces affordable
holubtsy
(cabbage rolls)
,
varenyky
(dumplings) and
deruny
(potato pancakes) in addition to pricier mains.
Zara Pizzara
PIZZERIA$$$
( 728 8888; vul Rishelyevska 5; mains 60-70uah; 9am-midnight)
Odesa's best pizzeria has
an enviously located summer terrace, real Italian-style thin-crust pizza loaded with top-
pings, and hefty calzones.

Dacha

a family summer cottage - is a dreamworld of happy childhood memories for locals.
