Good for
a light lunch or a night on the house-brewed Klubne beer, this central European-style
warren of brick cellars decorated with an assortment of international beer paraphernalia
has proved so popular it's even swallowed up a couple of adjacent eateries. Insert your-
self at one of the hefty wooden tables, wait for your golden ale to arrive (with free pea-
nuts) then choose from the thirst-inducing menu. Service is unusually brisk, and the
crowd gets more good-natured as the night progresses. Bookings recommended for Fri-
day and Saturday nights.

Seems every post-Soviet city has a pub
called 'The Barrel', but they're not always as pleasant as this atmospheric little wood-
and-stone faux medieval cellar on pl Rynok. Enter through the barrel-shaped facade or
take a summertime seat by the town hall for a pint or two and some cheap soak-up grub.

Don't be fooled by the un-
refined picture menu outside, Franko plates up some of the best gourmet Ukrainian food
in the Carpathians and has the door stickers to prove it. The finely tuned
varenyky
(dumplings),
ukha
(fish soup),
deruny
(potato panckakes) and
kotlety
(meatballs) are a
world away from their canteen cousins, but there's lots of more sophisticated fare on the
extensive menu if you've had your fill of Slavic edibles. The various dining spaces are
done out with panache, the cellar Lower Hall being our favourite.
