Andriyivsky Uzviz & Podil
Alaverdy EASTERN EUROPEAN$

(vul Sahaydachnoho 23/4; mains 20-25uah; Poshtova pl) This unpretentious little affair is
the best value of Kyiv's many Georgian restaurants. There's no English menu; if you're
stuck order some suluguni (Georgian cheese) and anything from the 'hot dishes'; it's all
good (unless you're vegetarian).
Harbuzyk UKRAINIAN$$$

(Little Pumpkin; vul Khoryva 2V; mains 35-100uah; 11am-11pm; Kontraktova pl) This fun, if
slightly hokey, eatery offers a great introduction to Ukrainian food without breaking the
bank. Pumpkin is not just in the name, it's all over the menu - from the mammlyha (Hut-
sul polenta-like dish) to fresh pumpkin juice. More unusual items on the drinks list in-
clude birch tree sap and kvas (drink made from rye bread). And there is plenty of horilka
(vodka) - pure and pumpkin-free. Set lunch served between 11am and 5pm is a great
deal at 43uah.

( 425 4548; www.kanapa-restaurant.kiev.ua ; Andriyvsky uzviz 19; mains 100uah; 9am-11pm;
) Sneak away from the busy uzviz and you find yourself in what seems like a tree-
house - a wooden terrace perched above the dense canopy of trees underneath. A unique
place, Kanapa serves gentrified, 21st-century Ukrainian food, largely made from their
own farm's produce. Everything tastes great and you can spend a lot of money here. Our
favourite is okroshka cold soup made with rhubarb kvas and served in a bowl of ice - lit-
erally.

( 428 7579; Sahaydachnoho 10/5; mains 95-165uah; 11am-11pm; ; Poshtova pl or Kon-
traktova pl) This small place is tucked into a vaulted cellar with green walls and Chagall-
style frescoes. It has an extensive menu of Jewish dishes that hail from all parts of
Ukraine. The bill is a laugh - if only in the sense that it comes with a random Jewish
joke, although the three-course lunch available from 11am to 4pm on weekdays is also
laughably cheap.
