Epiphany RELIGIOUS
In January scores of the faithful leap into the Dnipro River at Hydropark and elsewhere
to celebrate the baptism of Christ.
Ivan Kupala FESTIVAL
On the night of this pagan fest (6 July, but often moved to the nearest weekend), crowds
pour into Pyrohovo Museum of Folk Architecture to sing and dance, consume tons of
food and - most importantly - jump over fire with your beloved ones.
Kraina Mriy Festival MUSIC
( www.krainamriy.com ) VV frontman Oleh Skrypka organises a three-day festival of ethnic
music from Ukraine and elsewhere in July during the countrywide Ivan Kupala festival.
Over the last years the same festival has also taken place in January around Orthodox
Christmas.
Kyiv Days CITY FESTIVAL
This celebration of spring brings musicians and street performers to Andriyivsky uzviz,
maydan Nezalezhnosti and other streets of the capital on the last weekend of May.
Baptism of Rus RELIGIOUS
Kyivans plunge into the Dnipro River on 12 August, just as they did in 988 AD on the
orders of Prince Volodymyr, who decided that his land should join the Christian world.
Gogolfest ART
A lively festival of modern theatre, music, cinema, architecture and all imaginable kinds
of art dedicated to writer Nikolai Gogol takes place in early September. It's new and not
necessarily annual.
