Belém Tower
Attractions & Activities
Lisbon's rollercoaster history is told through magnificent buildings such as Jeronimos
Monastery and Belem Tower, fascinating museums such as the Gulbenkian Museum, Tile
Museum, and Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, and the riches gained from exploration evid-
ent in the world's most expensive chapel, São Roque Church. However, the biggest attrac-
tion is the city itself, from listening to street singers in the Moorish Alfama's alleyways to
mingling with the locals in the bars of Barrio Alto. Two distinct architectural styles can be
found in the city - the embellished 16 th Century Manueline evident in the Belem district
and the rigid yet stylish Pombaline evident in the downtown area - alongside the occasional
contemporary building. Most of the city's sights can be easily explored by foot, however, if
climbing hills isn't for you the tram, metro, and funicular provide excellent transport links.
