#2 Porto
© Wikimedia / Rititaneves
The second-largest city in Portugal, Porto can rightly be called the soul of Portugal, lending
its name to the country, its language, and the world-famous Port wine. Steep, narrow streets
lined with ancient buildings and balconied terraces provide a distinct character to the city,
making it one of the most aesthetically pleasing in Portugal. The combination of old and
new adds to the charm, from the slick commercial hub to the UNESCO World Heritage Site
of the slightly dilapidated riverfront district. The recent boom in tourism has turned this un-
discovered metropolis into a city of international culture and activity, however, it maintains
its traditions wonderfully.
